Shot Heard Round the World

It was the culmination of every Detroit Tiger's fan's dreams under the age of 30..... well almost anyway. Magglio Ordonez bottom of the ninth 3-run walk off home run sent the Tigers rocketing into the World Series early last night. The fairy tale continues for the Detroit Tigers, as they will now await the winner of the NLCS to meet them in the World Series. Although Oakland was able to put up much more of a fight in game 4, it was still the same old story for the '06 Tigers. Dominating pitching, and clutch hitting. Bonderman, Walker, Grilli, and Ledezma combined for the result, with young lefty Wilfredo Ledezma getting his first ever postseason victory. Oakland starter Danny Haren pitched well, and a tiring Huston Street was the losing pitcher on the evening. Ordonez finished with 2 HR and 4 RBI's, his bat finally came alive during this series and he was able to break out of a minor slump in a huge way. Not enough can be said about this 2006 Tiger's squad, their true test is now 4 games away. Riding a club record 7-game postseason winning streak and having plenty of time to rest the Boys of Summer will be anxiously awaiting the winner of the Mets/Cards NCLS.

Looking for the 4th

For the sixth time in seventy-six postseason games the Detroit Tigers were able to shut-out their opponent. The Tigers now hold a commanding 3-0 lead in the American League Championship Series over the struggling Oakland Athletics. The A's were able to manage only two hits thanks to another dominating postseason pitching performance by the 41 year old Kenny Rogers. Polanco and Orodnez singled home an RBI each off Harden in the first, and then Monroe finished the scoring blasting a solo shot off of Rich Harden to make the game 3-0. Tiger reliever Fernando Rodney got the final two outs of the eigth, and veteran closer Todd Jones pitched to his second save of the series to seal game three for Detroit. Game 4 will be played Saturday at 4:30, Jeremy Bonderman will look to send the Tigers to the world series for the first time since 1984 battling against another strong Oakland arm, Danny Haren.

Detroit Baseball

Yesterday was the greatest day in recent memory for many Detroit sports fans. Not only did the Michigan Wolverines pulverize the Spartans to improve to 6-0 on the year. More importantly the Detroit Tigers won their first postseason series since 1984. Fueled by an incredible pitching performance by Jeremy Bonderman, clutch hitting up and down the lineup, and the outstanding coaching by Jim Leyland and his staff. The Tigers were able to dominate the Yankees throughout the entire series.

A-Rod continued an atrocious career postseason performance going 1-14, with 4 K's and now walks for a whopping postseason average of .071. Giambi was struggling so much that he didn't even play. Sheffield finished with multiple errors at first base and a pitiful average of .081. Matsui, Cabrera, and Cano, all hit under .250 for the series as well. There was no stopping the dominating pitching by Bonderman, Rogers, Verlander, Zumaya, and Walker for the week. The Tigers were able to come up with clutch hits, play strong defense, and rely on dominate pitching which helped them to get to the postseason for the first time since 1987.
